The official Status Checker (fastest way)
Service Canada has a CDCP Status Checker that works without any account or login. Have these ready for each person you're checking:
- Your application code or client number (member ID) — it's the number you got after applying, in the top right corner of your CDCP letter, or on your member card.
- Your Social Insurance Number (SIN). For a child without a SIN, use their full name and date of birth instead.
⚠️ Safety first: only enter your SIN on official Government of Canada websites (canada.ca and service.canada.ca). No other website — including this one — can check your status for you, and no legitimate service will ever ask for your SIN to do it.
Two other ways to check
- My Service Canada Account: sign in to your MSCA (GCKey or a Sign-In Partner like your bank) and open the Canadian Dental Care Plan section. You can also read your letters there.
- By phone: call Service Canada at 1-833-537-4342 (TTY 1-833-677-6262). Note: the automated phone service can't check a child who has no SIN — use the online tool or ask for a representative.
How long it takes — and what's normal
Most decisions arrive within about 4 to 8 weeks. Weeks of silence in the middle are normal — the government only contacts you when there's a decision. The most common holdup: your (or your partner's) tax return isn't processed yet — eligibility can't be confirmed without it.
Tip: in your MSCA communication preferences, choose "Digital" — you'll get the decision by email instead of waiting for a letter in the mail.
What happens when you're approved
The government sends you an enrolment letter with your member ID, your coverage start date, and your co-payment level. Book care only on or after that start date — earlier visits are not covered and never paid back. Bring your member ID, start date, co-payment level, and a piece of ID to your first appointment. Sun Life mails a welcome package (member card and plan details) later; it can take up to three months, and you don't need to wait for it.
While you wait
Get ahead of the next steps: see how to find a dentist who accepts the CDCP and what the plan pays in the CDCP fee guide. Remember that coverage isn't forever — you'll need to renew every year. And if you haven't applied yet, start with how to apply.
